Cluster algebras with three vertices and the Markov equation
Lutz Hille
29 Oct 2006, 15:00 – 17:00

The classical Markov equation $ x^2 + y^2 + z^2 - 3 xyz = 0$ plays a role in the classification of exceptional vector bundles on the projective plane: the solutions are the possible ranks of exceptional vector bundles. A similar equation $ x^2 + y^2 + z^2 - xyz = C$ appears in the theory of cluster algebras. The value of $ C$ characterizes cluster-acyclic triples $ x,y,z$ . We give a short introduction to cluster algebras and explain why the Markov equation appears. Moreover, we relate both problems to the corresponding derived categories.
